The new lunch program through Taher has offered students a variety of options. We have averaged 72 students per day eating hot lunch. Here are a few lessons learned during the first 2 weeks:
- Our cook is Patty Meier. She works for Taher and has been very helpful and is responsible for all the cooking and serving.
- Ordering: Milk comes with every meal served. The 3rd column for milk should only be checked if the student is bringing cold lunch and wants milk, or if the hot lunch student wants 2 milks.
- Students have several options each day with fruits and vegetables which they self-serve from the cart.
- Side dishes: Students may need to ask for side dishes like mashed potatoes. The shorter students cannot see in the serving dishes on the counter.
- Some entrees are prepared daily in our kitchen. The macaroni and cheese was made from noodles which were boiled and shredded cheese was added. The meatloaf was baked at Grace from fresh ground beef. Fresh food is delivered daily to Grace.
- We are working on efficiency in serving. Some of the entree choices have taken longer to serve. That should improve with time and as we pre-portion more sides to make serving easier.
- The health inspector from Waukesha county has visited to ensure that Grace is using proper food handling and preparation procedures. Grace passed the first inspection.
